Reported by Galen | January 3rd, 2010 @ 07:17 AM | in 2.1 Release

hi. i just tried using 2.1pre5 (os x) and when it opens the screen is white. as in, snow white. the auctions load, but you can't see them because of the screen. you can click on an auction and it is there, but it doesn't show any of the auction because of the screen. the picture i attached shows what i mean. i had to click on one of the auctions to be able to see its status.

    Greetings,

What I need most of all is log files. If you have a log file from when you launched 2.1pre5 under OS X 10.4 (make sure Java 1.5 is the topmost in the Java Preferences.app), please attach it using the 'Attach a file' form below.

I don't know what's wrong; I can't replicate it using Java 1.5 under OS X 10.5, so it has to be something specific to 10.4. I'm hoping that the log file will contain something useful.

    Thank you!

    Greetings,

I really need some log files for the cases that occurred; they should be in Library/Preferences/JBidwatcher from your home directory.

    Greetings,

Also, please report Java version (top entry in Java Preferences.app), OS X version (Apple | About This Mac), and hardware platform (PPC, Intel, 32/64 bit).

Thanks muchly, and I'm very sorry you're having these issues with 2.1pre5!

    Greetings,

I have an entirely-test version I'd like you to try. I don't expect this to work completely, but it would help narrow down the possibilities.

    It's at:
    http://www.jbidwatcher.com/download/JBidwatcher-2.1pre5-2.dmg

This version will NOT work its best under OS X 10.5 or later, but it may work better for 10.4.

PLEASE try it and let me know!

    Greetings,

I have uploaded a new test version; http://www.jbidwatcher.com/download/JBidwatcher-2.1pre5-uitest.dmg

This one contains what I believe is a fix for the errors that showed up in @tyrelcorp's logs as I predicted. (Well, I thought they'd show up in everybody's logs, so I'm still not sure it'll fix it for everybody, but the problem shown in @tyrelcorp's logs is what I theorized could be wrong.)

Please give this ui test version a try, and let me know if anything's different!

    Morgan,

Looks like I'm experiencing the same issue on a unix platform. Can we get a .jar file built so I can test the fix?

    Greetings,
@Rob - The problem had to do with custom painters I'm using specifically under Mac OS X, to draw the rows using system colors for backgrounds. Under Mac OS X 10.4, those system colors weren't exposed via the typical UI framework, so I got null back, which caused rendering to error out. I hadn't made that code platform independent yet (the UIDefault properties have very OS specific names), so I don't think you can be hitting the same bug. I'm happy to provide the .jar file (or it can be built from source), I just can't imagine it would help, given the bug.

What Java version are you running? If it's not the Sun Java version, could you upgrade to Sun's Java, and make sure to do whatever alternatives-setting is necessary to make it use that version? There are known problems with the various non-Sun Java versions, although not 'known' in the sense of 'collated in one place'. They include problems with HTTPS, and Swing issues.

Here's a build, fresh from my tree. It's untested, but you can use it to try and track down the problem you're seeing. It's not quite the same version as uitest above, it's about 15 commits later down the tree. It fixes high bidder recognition, simplifies uploading log files, adds the ability to report 'snipe' operations to 'My JBidwatcher' in the future, and silences a few warnings for folks who have chosen to use MySQL.

    http://www.jbidwatcher.com/download/JBidwatcher-2.1pre5-interim.jar

(For Mac folks following this ticket, this is NOT for Mac OS X; it might run, but it won't be tuned for it, or built in .app fashion. Use the uitest link above. I'll release these changes and more when I get a free weekend to breathe, test, and feel confident in the release.)

Thanks for the background information Morgan.

My configuration is a little unusual. Opensolaris/Gnome running on sparc or x86 hardware. Last system I tried was x86 with java 1.6.0_15. The issue is a little intermittent and everything seems to be working now. Have installed the new binary and will report back.
