NoClassDefFoundError:IRubyObject

Reported by jimav | April 12th, 2009 @ 09:48 PM | in Support

On Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid), the following appears on the terminal when starting up jbidwatcher:

@@@$ /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/bin/java -jar /usr/share/jbidwatcher/JBidwatcher-2.0.1.jar Sun Apr 12 20:43:44 PST 2009: JBidwatcher 2.0.1-825 Sun Apr 12 20:43:44 PST 2009: Sun Microsystems Inc. Java, version 1.6.0_10 on Linux Sun Apr 12 20:43:45 PST 2009: Error setting up scripting: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/jruby/runtime/builtin/IRubyObject Sun Apr 12 20:43:45 PST 2009: Loading listings from the database (0/1/1 entries, 1/1 auctions) Sun Apr 12 20:43:45 PST 2009: Done with the initial load (got 0 active entries)

At that point the normal window appears.

Hmm, that formatting is awful. The "Formatting help" pop-up says that bracketing code with @@@...@@@ would do the right thing, but it looks like it doesn't (and the final @@@ was there, really!).

Too bad this bug-system platform won't let you preview the report before submitting...

Ok, I'll try to put the output in here as a code block again...

    Greetings,

It's nothing. JBidwatcher supports some simple JRuby scripting, but because I don't include the JRuby jar in the standard distribution it recognizes (and reports) that exception and disables scripting support.

I tried, briefly, to release it with the JRuby stuff, but it added ~8MB to the program, and the only visible feature that users got was programmable custom columns. It was great for me, as I could extend JBidwatcher using one of my favorite languages, but I couldn't point to any immediate features that made it worth the huge size increase.

So I disabled it in the builds that get distributed, through the simple means of not including the .jar, recognizing its absence, and adjusting appropriately.

Sorry the message concerned you; nothing to worry about.
