eBay Change: eBay.com can't view auctions (from other country-sites) with no Paypal activated

Reported by bjj | October 27th, 2008 @ 01:09 PM | in 2.0 Full Release

For the third time I find Current auctions in Complete, no obvious reason or remedy in sight (restart won't help.) Otherwise program is delightful and pleasure to use. Thanks!

Argh! I'm afraid I need the new logs, then.

Sorry for not having attached it right away; despite start with --usb param I had to grab it out of the documents and settings folder ...

Attached you find some current bid attempts. Obviously it contains some redirection to ebay.de

    Sincerely,

    Hi,

the below part look similar than mine, even Morgan said I have a different problem (573). I noticed, just prior bidding JBW usually does a relogin. Exactly here we "crash" since the green button turns to yellow which I guess is indicated by that part of the log below. (key load failed)...

Mon Jan 05 16:55:27 CET 2009: Checking sign in as bid key load failed!
Mon Jan 05 16:55:27 CET 2009: 250351230297 (Makita 18v BSS611 BSS 611 Akku Handkreissäge Neu) - Failed to bid. 'Show Last Error' from context menu to see the failure page from the bid attempt.

I use ebay.de since I also found we get redirected to it anyway no matter we use co.uk or com. Hence I deleted (commented out) this bit:

    ebayServer.viewHost=cgi.ebay.co.uk
    ebayServer.dateFormat=dd-MMM-yy HH:mm:ss z
    ebayServer.shipping=Postage

Hope my input can be of any use...

    Cheers

    Axel

    Dear Axel,

    thanks for your input.

The config lines you commented out seem to be remnants of the overrides needed for Beta version 8.x. They are not part of a standard config file.

    Sincerely,

    Therese

  • Morgan Schweers

    Morgan Schweers January 5th, 2009 @ 02:10 PM

    Greetings,

@Axel, where were those lines that you commented out/deleted them? Btw, #573 was the same bug as Therese's January 4th, 2009 @ 07:11 AM log file, and that particular problem should be fixed with the -709 version, which leaves the problem of getting redirected. :(

If those property values were in JBidwatch.cfg, then as Therese says, they were probably part of the overrides. (Although those are usually prefixed with 'override.'.) If you changed something in the source files and recompiled, then that's not going to work... :)

The bid key failing to load isn't the same as login failing.

The part that's confusing me here is why you're all getting redirected to the ebay.de site after the bid completion. For example, I don't get redirected to ebay.com after bidding on something on ebay.co.uk. (On the flip side, if I browse to ebay.co.uk

For example, @Therese, your log file shows that the bid was successfully placed, but it was too low, so eBay rejected it. Unfortunately it did so with a page on ebay.de, not the ebay.co.uk page that it's supposed to be trying to work with, so there's no way for JBidwatcher to recognize the result. :(

I've put a -710 version up, and the only thing this does is add more debugging to the redirection process, so someone who has a non-US account can try and bid on an item and put up the log file, so I can see exactly how the redirection process happens.

You can try by underbidding (i.e. if an item is $10, bidding $5) and see what it does, the redirection should be the same if you're bidding to win or underbidding.

    Dear Morgan,

alright, downloaded the executable again and verified it was
    JBidwatcher 2.0beta10-710.

    Then did (a) an underbid on item 280298393857 -- 25 € (b) an overbid on same item 280298393857 -- 26.05 € (c) an underbid on item 260341435792 -- 45.00 € (d) an overbid on same item 260341435792 - 46.05 €

Non of them acutally went through, all produced the 'bid apparently failed for an unknown reason' error.

An these single four actions produced a remarkable 474 kB error log ... Attached.

    Sincerely,

    Therese

    Hi,

since I am also using a German ebay account I made some tests with auction 120358707228. If I place a bid on ebay.co.uk with a webbrowser I do not get redirected to ebay.de.

Placing the bid with the old JBidWatcher 1.0.3pre2 with my overrides above also still works.

I had unfortunately not yet the time to test JBW 2.0 beta 10.

    Cheers!

2.0 beta 10-710 works mostly OK now with regards to picking up My eBay auctions and getting the end date right, but there are a couple of items the price of which it persistently displays as "null (FP)". No amount of updating, shutting/restarting or removing/readding helps.

380095260406 and 350106765233 are two examples.

BTW, to check if JBW has picked up all My eBay items, it would help to show the number of items in each tab with the text in the tab.

    DIDI January 8th, 2009 @ 04:10 PM

Reading with much interest. I've been using 2.0beta9 , no problems until last night. Put in two auctions from the one user 1 came up as null.[1] Just downloaded next beta 10-710. Same thing. Only difference seems to be that while they are both BINs an offer has been made on the one showing null . That makes sense because we shouldn't be able to see what someone has offered. So null may be right here?? Don't need an answer just care on and I'll keep watching. lol Just for interest Item numbers 310113377991, 310113390896

    Dear Morgan,

in reply to your message of 5th...

Those lines have been in the JBidWatch.cfg. I didn't change anything in the source. In the meantime I also tried with an empty ~/.jbidwatcher/ directory but all the same.

Later I will download -710 and add the logs here. Does it make sense to try it with ebay.de or only co.uk?

    Morgan Schweers January 9th, 2009 @ 02:20 AM

    Greetings,

    I think I have a lead.

@Therese: If you can try setting your 'browse to' site to ebay.com, close and restart JBidwatcher, and try underbidding again...

One of my false starts for the fix was trying to make it actually support all the languages, and bust it open for all my users to try and provide properties files for everything. I quickly discovered how horribly bad that would be, in terms of things that aren't I18N'ed yet. So, there is an ebay_de.properties file, and if you start the app with 'ebay.de' as your default browse-to site it actually loads it and tries to use it as the server.

So instead, for now, set your browse target / country site to ebay.com, and (important!) close and restart JBidwatcher. The reason for the restarting is that it's the default auction server that gets set to the country site server.

Please let me know how that works, if at all different.

  • Morgan Schweers

    Morgan Schweers January 9th, 2009 @ 02:21 AM

    Greetings,

Note: anybody else can try this too. :) I mention @Therese because she's got the auctions to try to underbid on.

  • Therese Telepski

    Therese Telepski January 9th, 2009 @ 02:50 AM

    Dear Morgan,

    Therese is a 'shecat' ;-)

I followed your instructions (changing to ebay.com and restarting) JBW and yepp -- underbid was too low and overbid went through (although it was overbid right away).

Item no. is 260342918964; error log (small one this time) is attached.

    Sincerely,

    Therese

  • Therese Telepski

    Therese Telepski January 9th, 2009 @ 03:02 AM

    Another little addition:

After using ebay.com in the config the location column gets populated again for all auctions, the shipping and total apparently only for those listed on ebay.com (Paypal activated).

I also tried a bid for an item w/o Paypal activated and it went through (although outbid right away) -- no. 250351251949.

However the disadvantage is that the 'Show auction in browser' now leads to the well known error page on ebay.com if I want to take a look directly.

As I usually do so with most of the listed auctions that's getting me really busy now - unfortunately many sellers inform you about an item being defective not in the title, but only in very small letters somewhere within the auction description ...

Thus it deems a good idea to seperate your auction server for bidding/sniping mentioned January 9th, 2009 @ 02:20 AM -- should always be ebay.com right now as far as I got it) from the ebay site where to view auctions.

    Sincerely,

    Therese

  • Therese Telepski

    Therese Telepski January 9th, 2009 @ 03:09 AM

    Addition two:

I've got EUR (€) and USD ($) auctions in my list currently, and they are shown correctly.

Just for testing I added an auction from ebay.co.uk and the GBP currency (£) is also shown correctly.

Sorting seemes to work for all currency columns.

    Sincerely,

    Therese

    Morgan Schweers January 9th, 2009 @ 04:30 AM

    Greetings,

    @Therese: Ah! Sorry... Fix'd! :)

Yep, I can fix the 'show auction in browser' problem easily; as you say, going back to the old behavior, where the two are disconnected.

I'm pushing a new version shortly with a bunch of changes; hopefully it continues to work well. :) 2.0beta10-718

If all goes well, this will be the actual 2.0beta10 release.

  • Therese Telepski

    Therese Telepski January 9th, 2009 @ 06:10 AM

    Dear Morgan,

okay, downloaded JBW 2.0 B10-718, turned the server in config back to ebay.de, restarted JBW.

    Results:

    • A manual bid on item 230317725845 went through • 'Show In Browser' works as it should • Sorting by prices works • Foreign currencies (£, $, CHF) are shown correctly

No chance to snipe so far, but as this should use the same 'engine' as bidding combined with a timer, I assume it'll be fine, too.

Looks like this version is ready to go as a 'stable Beta'. The 'Set config and then restart JBW' info (if this is still needed) should be mentioned in big red capitals in the download section.

Still to do: Get the shipping and total for Non-Paypal items.

    Sincerely,

    Therese

P.S.: Do you work 25 hours a day? As far as I got it you're currently 'burning the midnight oil' quite strong ...

    Dear all,

I quickly looked thru the "browse to" discussion above.

However, here is still 2b10-710 running and I updated the ant-core (java-compiler) today. Further I set to ebay.co.uk and got an underbid snipe running normal and got a snipe 'won' so normal behaviour suddenly as long I am on co.uk. I will try to ebay.de and see what happens and later read this topic about "browse to" again. Up to now I changed nothing...

    Hi Axel,

maybe Morgan updated the Windows version to 2.0 B10-718 first as I seem to be surely not the only but one of the more active German Win users running into 'issues' with the internationalization of JBW.

Thus please be patient a little while; the updates for the OSes will be up this weekend. Please also bear in mind that Morgan has worked way after midnight last night despite having a family and a young child -- just give him a break ;-)

    Dear Therese,

first of all, what is a "shecat". Couldn't find in leo ;-))) Didn't know my English lacking so much ;>> maybe due to my all days Chinese business...

Actually Java is plattform indipendend so once there is the jar file I can use it on Linux. So I did this afternoon and I found several fancy stuffs with -718.

    • Snipped successfully on ebay.de (at that time it logged in once I added a auction)
    • the green botton with login name wasn't there but the console told me logged in successfully
    • restarted jbidwatcher and it doesn't login (how could I force it to?)
    • klicked the button to update all actions (two in the list) but nothin happened. -location is there but shipping cost is missing

This "browse to"... I found it no where. What is it about or is there actually something diff. between WIN and plain .JAR?

    Therese, break? ;-))))

    AxelG January 9th, 2009 @ 09:01 AM

    Add on,

o.k. I found the menu "ebay / Refresh ebay session". Once I klick that the green button/ebay-name+time is there and it loggs in but at the moment I tried several times with ebay.de and ebay.co.uk and in both cases it (718) doesn't login on startup. Anyway very happy it can be used again.

    Dear Axel,

A 'Shecat' is a female person.

In the context menu of a single auction line you should find something like 'Show In Browser'. It's also present in the Auction submenu.

    Sincerely,

    Therese

  • Morgan Schweers

    Morgan Schweers January 9th, 2009 @ 01:44 PM

    Greetings,

@Therese: Thank you VERY much for checking all that! The 'set config and restart' shouldn't be necessary anymore. You can change the Browse To site to whatever you want and it should pick it up immediately.

The snipe engine is the same, but it uses everything; log in, place bid, waits 2 minutes, submit final bid.

I'll figure out the shipping later. :) Although having some item numbers where shipping is visible but not showing up in JBidwatcher might help. Still, maybe that should be a different bug...

I mostly work on JBidwatcher at night, because of the little guy. He's 8 months old, and I love spending time with him, but the time I have to myself to program is generally between midnight and 5am. (Although sometimes my wonderful wife kicks me up to the home office and says, 'go program'. :) )

I'm currently unemployed (got laid off) so I've been taking the opportunity to get some coding done at night, since I don't have to be at work in the morning.

  • Morgan Schweers

    Morgan Schweers January 9th, 2009 @ 01:48 PM

    Greetings,

@AxelG The 'browse to' solution is actually inherent in the -710 version; I used the browse-to site to construct a country bundle. (It was one of a number of false starts at solving this problem, but I never got around to removing it from the code until the -718 version.) Yes, setting browse-to to ebay.co.uk would work, but so should downloading the 2.0beta10-718 version, and I recommend that one more. :)

I updated the Windows standalone, the Mac OS X .dmg and .app.tar.gz, and the Linux (or any platform) .jar file. Making the Windows installer takes a specific computer in the house, and it's not my main development box these days.

I figured Therese used 'shecat', since I call myself 'CyberFOX', it was an animal play on being a female. :) I went back and fixed my post, so it might not make as much sense reading linearly...

I can believe that shipping might be something I'm currently missing. Throw a few item numbers at me with shipping that isn't visible, and I'll take a quick look. If they're calculated shipping (based on your address) I might not be able to pick that up, but we'll see.

It looks like I might actually have a release that helps soon.

  • Therese Telepski

    Therese Telepski January 9th, 2009 @ 02:10 PM

    Dear Morgan,

you're welcome! We are the ones who have to say 'Thanks a lot!'

Items where shipping is visible on ebay.de, but not in JBW are e.g.:

    330298406718 160308083994 270325827695 260343901154

Common denominator: Private sales, no Paypal. Shipping for those items is only visible on ebay.de, not an other countries' sites.

    Sincerely,

    Therese

P.S.: As far as I remember 'Tomcat' and 'Shecat' were some big robots manned with little green man/woman from Siga some time ago in the Perry Rhodan Science fiction series; Tradom episode (2100-2200). Thus it is a wordgame; but Therese is definitely female, too ;-)

  • Morgan Schweers

    Morgan Schweers January 9th, 2009 @ 02:35 PM

    Greetings,

Okay, @Therese and @AxelG, the shipping problem is fixable, but not simple.

On the ebay.com site, listings have a Shipping: field in the top block. On ebay.de (and ebay.co.uk) the listing of shipping prices is at the bottom in a table. It's not hard for me to parse that table, but it's going to take a bit of new code, and I don't want to jinx this version by writing a lot more code just yet.

I should be able to fix it pretty quickly once I do focus on it, but I want to get a stable release out first.

  • Andreas Stempfhuber

    Andreas Stempfhuber January 9th, 2009 @ 06:41 PM

    Hi Morgan,

you can get the shipping price by searching for "Postage" or to be precise "^Postage:$" (e.g. ebayServer.shipping=^Postage:$ for ebay.co.uk). That works since JBidWatcher gets a different html page from ebay.co.uk as e.g. Firefox gets (seems that ebay is using a browser switch/user agent detection).

    Cheers!

    Andreas

  • Andreas Stempfhuber

    Andreas Stempfhuber January 9th, 2009 @ 09:45 PM

It's not a browser switch, it's because I was not logged in with the browser. "Postage" is displayed as soon as the user is logged in and there is a postage for the country of the user. See also attached screenshot.

    Cheers!

    Andreas

  • Morgan Schweers

    Morgan Schweers January 9th, 2009 @ 10:05 PM

    Greetings,

@Andreas: I've added that one in as an additional match, it looks useful, but it doesn't seem to apply to the listings I've been looking at.

It may be something about them being listed originally on ebay.de...

I also confirmed it by clearing out my ebay.co.uk cookies and it showed up for some items, but not for the ones that I'm looking at, unfortunately.

Edit: Weird! I'm looking at the same item, and I can't get it to display Postage: in the browser...or in JBidwatcher, either. :(

Further edit: Ah! See the 'You are signed in' message? It means that it's recognizing enough cookies from you to see that your account is in Germany, and thus it can show the Postage prompt. Since mine's not it doesn't show it, but it's possible that JBidwatcher will preserve enough cookies when viewing items to get that information for users who are in a shipped-to region.

    Dear Morgan, dear all,

same as Therese, I'd like to point out, it is us to say thank you. We are just supporters but who gives us this remarkable software?

No matter we snipe something, we need to read the offer first and than read the postage though. Hence, take your time, we just commented what didn't work anymore ;-)))

At that moment I more wonder about why the auto-login doesn't work anymore. Or is this at the end a solution to hide JBW since keeping us logoff as long as possible?

Funny is, during this time I learned the drag'n'drop function which I never new ;-))) but it works only with konqueror not with firefox here. Since the konqueror is buggy in 4.1.3..... ;>> Never mind.

    Regards Axel

  • Morgan Schweers

    Morgan Schweers January 9th, 2009 @ 11:58 PM

    Greetings,

@AxelG: Thanks for the kind words...

Auto-login should work just fine still...

It should first update the login cookie 3 seconds after startup, then every 8 hours, 1 minute and 17 seconds after that. (Just a random time distance, in order to not look too bot-like.)

Drag and drop under X11 is something I haven't tested in a while unfortunately; I'm constantly using Linux, but as a headless development server. The last time I recall hearing something about that, it had a bit to do with what version of FF and what version of Java, but it's lost in the haze of history at this point. (The browser may have been 'Mozilla', even...)

If you set debug.uber to true using the advanced configuration tab, then it's possible you might see some debugging information about drag-and-drop actions. (Please open a new bug for it though; I'm looking forward to closing this one, as I'm sure are the 18 other people watching it. :) )

Any other bugs that aren't part of this one, I'd love to talk about them, but let's create a new ticket for them.

    Dear Morgan,

    My pleasure!

Sorry to say, but auto-login does not work here at the moment. You can see it on the errors.163.log. I opened at 10:24:08 and closed at 10:24:55. No login until than.

errors.164.log is similar just I klicked the "refresh ebay Session" button.

Up to here I used 718. errors.165.log is similar than 163 but now with 2b10-722

Didn't find "debug.uber" in the advanced configuration tab but can add that manually to the JBidWatch.cfg.

  • Morgan Schweers

    Morgan Schweers January 10th, 2009 @ 02:04 AM

    Greetings,

Whoa! @AxelG, all kinds of things are going to fail for you there...

You have something like 'background=' in your JBidWatch.cfg file; it's bad data. (Crap, I need to launch the My JBidwatcher site soon; it'd catch stuff like that.)

JBidwatcher is failing when trying to parse that empty string as a background color, and it's dying before it can finish initializing all the services it runs internally.

This means that checking for JBidwatcher updates, time synchronization, and the every-8-hours login are all not going to work for you. In addition, item updating, and recurring searches won't be working. Snipes and such are handled by the auction servers which have been instantiated at that point, but MUCH of the other functionality of JBidwatcher will have been compromised.

I have no idea how you got an empty background color string in your configuration, but I think if you delete that entry, you should get substantial JBidwatcher function back.

The trick, btw, about the advanced configuration is that JBidwatcher looks for many configuration values that aren't normally set. You can add configuration entries just by entering the settings. So you could add a debug.uber key with a value of true, and JBidwatcher will use that when it runs across 'verbose' debugging code.

  • AxelG

    AxelG January 10th, 2009 @ 02:14 AM

    Hi Morgan,

DARNED that was my mistake. Once upon a time I set the background colour and later didn't find it anymore. So recently I restarted with an empty /.jbidwatcher folder and while comparing the two configs I found the background colour and deleted the value (didn't dare to delete the whole line). Didn't expect this could cause a stop-parsing situation. Maybe a fallback behaviour for such kind of behaviour is a good idea but that is another topic...

Deeply sorry to cause additional, unwanted, not needed investigaion effords.

Additional comment... found another empty string - proxy.pass= I never touched that. Shall I delete?

    Dear Morgan,

wow, that really was a task to solve!

Just to confirm that 2B10-722 works as it should (at least on German XP XP3 and Vista32 systems) including sorting, picking shipping costs and browse to correct site when viewing an auction.

Is there a short way to tell technically interested forum readers how you managed to solve this w/o complete internationalization (which seemed to be the first approach)?

    Sincerely,

    Therese

Greetings, Sure, I can try... My first approach was to dynamically create a ebayServer object that pointed to the right server when the ebay.com site indicated the listing was only valid on a different site.

This sucked. :) Specifically, I can straightforwardly create a properties file that manages to parse ebay.de (for example) items, and I could probably do it for ebay.it, and maybe a few others, but it's an overwhelming amount of work to do it for everything. Plus, that's only parsing. It's not handling bid result pages, or captcha's, etc... In order to get it to work, there's dozens of pieces of text that need to be found. (Not translated, but found on the apppropriate pages.) I pretty quickly realized this wasn't going to scale at all, and future site changes were going to multiply the pain several times over.

Around that point in time, I realized that the items (while not being visible on ebay.com) were visible on ebay.co.uk. So now I only needed two servers running at once. If ebay.com said, 'Not I!', then I could check on the secondary server and it would be able to parse with basically the same text. So I started implementing a simple fail-over for parsing; if the parse failed with a 'not on this server' message, it would try the secondary server, and set that server as 'owning' the listing.

The reason for marking the secondary server as owning the listing is that I'm not sure that you can submit a bid on ebay.com for an item that's not visible on ebay.com. I decided that if the auction was loaded from ebay.co.uk, that bids (and snipes) should go there as well.

Note: When JBidwatcher first starts up, all auctions are owned by the primary server. As they're updated, it turns ownership over to the secondary server as necessary. So there's an interesting question (i.e. potential bug that I will try to resolve soon) of what happens if you try to place a bid on an auction that hasn't been updated yet, right after app start. Still, snipes will almost always have been updated at least once, and thus be owned appropriately.

It was, indeed, a pretty hefty task. It was made a little harder than it should have been because JBidwatcher didn't really cleanly support having more than one eBay auction server instantiated at a time. I had to clean that up, and make that possible before I could solve any of the other problems.

    chuckle

    Long and verbose, that's me...

...and I'm really sorry it took 3 months. :( There were a lot of fits and starts, or dead-end alleys in getting to the end, and I was flatlined sick for about three weeks of it.

But it works for now, and that's a very happy thing. :)

    Morgan,

thanks for your work on JBidWatcher and the time and effort you put in this application.

    I appreciate this very much.

    Morgan,

listen this is great! I have no idea how you do this, but it's altogether out of the ordinary. Updated to JB 2.11 and had it on snipe by the time the auction ended when my connection dropped for no good reason. However, after regaining signal eB mailed me that I was the high bidder. Don't get me wrong, I don't think this is a bug, this is a great feature. Keep it coming, good man!

    Cheers, bjj
