difficult to say but trhe program is a whole bug.

Reported by ivan | October 7th, 2015 @ 12:42 PM | in 2.1 Release

Dear Sir,

For long this error was constantly appearing:
"Couldn't set up tray access: C:\Users\Admin.jbidwatcher\platform\tray.dll: Can't load IA 32-bit .dll on a AMD 64-bit platform" No replies to questions and the FAQ is no help.

About one month ago, it began to show up a yellow button with lots errors in the log, especially "Security checks out, but no My eBay form link on final page..." followed with what looks to be html.

For 3 or 4 days; it began to not refresh the auction list, no dates, no prices. Relaunching it did solve the issue.
Today, no way to fix the problems. I just realized that the green button has re-appeared. On top of that, snipping doesn't work any more and I missed 3 auctions.

This is discouraging to donate since the messages I send were not replied and jBidwatcher is now become totally useless and a real pain.

Unfortunately, I found nothing else on the web to replace it.
Thanks in advance and so sorry for my anger if you happen to reply to this message.

Best regards

So sad to read this. But I have had to find something else as well, and I have a horrible feeling that it may be ripped off from you, but it has worked for me. I have used JBidwatcher for years and loved it , not that often because I am not a big buyer. But at the moment there is something I really want and I definitely can't trust Jbidwatcher

Why oh why didn't you put a price on this years ago?? I am sure many would have been happy to pay and perhaps it would have paid enough give you the time to work with the app. I hate to lose it. :(

    • State changed from “new” to “open”

    Greetings,
I didn't put a price on it because eBay could, at any time, make it stop working. There's a world of difference between someone donating, because they've had a good run of use of the program and are happy with it, versus someone paying to use a program that stops working due to nothing I have control over.

I doubt ivan feels ripped off, I think he's suggesting that it discourages him from donating because the program isn't stable, and I'm not responsive, and he's right.

I'll take a look this weekend, and try to figure out what they changed, and broke, and if I can fix it.

In the mean time, if you're looking for an alternative to JBidwatcher, I highly recommend http://gixen.com . No affiliation, but the developer there and I have spoken a number of times over the years, and he's a decent guy.

I don't think anyone feels ripped off . I do think that it being free doesn't make us feel better when it is not working. Haha!! As I said I am not a huge user and I do donate from time to time. I think most of us understand the ebay issues and still would have been happy to pay knowing you would try to make it work for us. I certainly would have been .

    Good luck anyway.

It is actually showing time left now so I assume it would be sniping again.

    Dear Morgan,

    Thank you for your reply.
I'm glad that this software is still alive! That was not my impression until now and I'm also realizing that eBay is playing with the developers' nerves !
I've been using it for almost one year, feeling happy with it although it has some weaknesses and frustrated in the same time when issues are happening. By the moment, it's quite exhausting! Previously, I was using eBay Reminder, which support ended two years ago. Then I tried a bunch of software that didn't provide any satisfaction, ending with yours that's promising.

Yes, yesterday, I was angry because I lost two important auctions and a minor one I was expecting to win. They were sold below my maximum snipping bid !

To be more constructive, I analyzed mo log file and pointed some errors and annoyances I was trying to fix:

This error is listed more than 20 times, sometimes with different item numbers and some errors are sharing the same number !

    • jbidwatcher takes ages to be operational, 2 or 3 minutes, probably because of the above, even 15 mn during the last weeks (certainly due to the yellow dot and logging errors logged in the log file). It uses a lot of CPU activity and blocks the other programs opening at the same time. I made an automatic task to delay its launching, basically 5 minutes. This doesn't solve the issue when I have to manually open a slow program (open office for example) when jBidwatcher is fighting against errors.

    • When an auction has ended, there are 2 or more remnants of the auction in the "current" folder as well as in the folder where the auction has been moved to. Closing and re-opening the program usually gets rid of the issue.

    • I have created dedicated folders for won auctions, lost auctions and some thematic other ones, where I put my reference auction prices. I redirected the auctions I won to !Purchased, the ones I lose, to !Lost. Almost every time I win an auction, it ends into !Lost.

    • Some auctions completely disappear from the list, not because they are deleted by eBay but for an unknown reason. I couldn't find any related event however.

    • Some active auctions are marked as ended and moved to the "complete" folder without any reason. Correcting that with "advanced" "marked not ended" usually works.

    • For some days, the items in the current folder's window became undated and unsorted while the auction checking was progressing, ending with a bare list. No further action was possible. Closing and re-opening didn't cure the behavior.

    • Some groups of lines that look like errors:

Now, for the Nice to have:
    - We are allowed to export the folders' contents but not import a file. The need to import a list is quite frequent.

That's all for the moment. I hope I didn't bother you too much.
If you need further information for debugging, feel free to ask me.

Thanks in advance and best regards.
Also a big thank you for all your efforts that I wasn't understanding.

This may be a dumb question because I don't know much about the inner workings, and really don't want to . :) But is it possible some of the problems are app nap ??

  • Morgan Schweers

    Morgan Schweers October 9th, 2015 @ 04:13 PM

    Greetings,
@DIDI - Ivan's logs indicate he's running on Windows, which doesn't have App Nap.

My most recent version (2.5.6) SHOULD help with the App Nap issue, as I wrote a native component that theoretically disables App Nap. You can tell by pulling up Activity Monitor, and looking under the Energy tab, and look for JBidwatcher. If it has 'No' in the 'App Nap' column, and probably 'Yes' in the 'Preventing Sleep' column, then it should be working. (It's working for me, in a quick test on my work system.)

@ivan - That's a lot of stuff to look at. I appreciate it, but I'd much rather you attached a few log files to this ticket. Down at the bottom you'll find a green '+' which allows you to attach files.

    A few notes:

    • Don't worry about the IA 32 / AMD error, it shouldn't matter as long as you're running a recent version of Java. The .dll in question is a native way for JBidwatcher to talk to the system tray. It exists to help folks who are running a version of Java prior to when it added Tray support into the core libraries.

    • Potential quote errors just means eBay's HTML is atrocious. They don't close quotes on some of their tags, which means browsers (and JBidwatcher) have to work extra-hard to figure out what the web developers meant. Generally JBidwatcher can figure it out, it just logs it, just in case.

    • The exceptions, and a few other things, all need the full context, i.e. the log files, for me to figure out what's going wrong. I've blocked off some time this weekend to work on JBidwatcher, trying to fix the yellow ball, and understand why dates are disappearing. :( Please upload relevant log files, if you have any, it'll help.

    Good morning Morgan,

Sorry for the delay, I didn't notice you replied.
Here after are some log files. I just replaced my mail address by " my_mail_address " in order to not disclose it over the web.
    - edited error34 is the today's log. Nothing to be reported yet. - edited error33 status= OK. I relaunched JBW after a not working period, all dates were reported as N/A - error32 didn't work. Very short session. - edited error31 looks interesting because issues. Unfortunately I didn't write down what was malfunctioning. - error30 I was too deeply busy designing PCBs to see what was happening on eBay. Horrible! - edited error16 I think that's the last time I had issues with the login and the last time the yellow button was present.

    Best regards

    Oh, I forgot to tell:

In the error34.log, line #18, I won this item. It should have been moved to the purchased flap (picture "Item not moved properly").

error33.log, line #18, the item is reported as moved. In fact, it disappeared from the list (picture "Item won but disappeared from JBW").

THis is the flap configuration for current and purchased; pictures "Current flap options" & "Purchased flap options". It's working from time to time but there's possibly an issue with the ! and/or space characters.

    Greetings,
I've fixed and committed the change that figures out the end date better; I just need to investigate why the login sometimes shows yellow instead of green. To do that, unfortunately, I need eBay to drop the captcha on my own accounts. :(

I have fixes for some stuff, but I haven't released it yet, I'm afraid.

@ivan - Thank you for the detailed logs! I took a look at one of them and noticed that eBay occasionally was prompting you to fill out your secret question.

It might have been that interstitial that was making the logins appear to fail; if you set your secret question (for forgot password) it may start working cleanly again... Let me know if that's the case!

    Hello Morgan,

Thanks a lot for your feedback.
I just updated my secret questions. Now, I have to wait for the next eBay upsetting change to see if the button turns yellow again. For the moment, it's green and this more or less coincidate with the end of the login issues (by the 16 of Oct. (log #16).
JBW is still long to load, longer than before eBay bagan to play with our nerves. Might it be due to the number of redirections ?
At the moment, no dates are showing and it's highly frustrating because I have auctions on going and I can't figure what they are to manually bid on them.

It would be nice to automatically save the picture of the current folder at jBW shutdown, with a provision of let say 7 days, like ERUNT is doing with the Registry (http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/erunt.txt). It's an old utility still working on Seven and I love its way to proceed. It saved my life on several occurrences, after a BSOD, a virus infection or even after I tempered the registry, far better than the windows restoration system.

That said, reading through the Notepad or restoring a previous file or even transferring an auction list to another computer seems to be really useful.

Feel free to request older error files with a specific issue, if It can help you, it's a pleasure, I have 1-yar archived logs, except June 2015.

    Best regards

    YELLOW BUTTON this morning!

    Hello Morgan,

Although the secret questions were set, the yellow button re-appeared this morning. The code logged in the error log is a little bit different but it took the same time (- 6 minutes) as previously to get logged into eBay.
When the button is green the login is lasting 4 to 5 seconds, even when the date/time reads N/A.
Yesterday, date/time information were not available for most of the day. Was OK at night.

What about the investigations on your side ?
I understood that the patch was not downloadable until you've completely tested it.
Yesterday, I opened an event summary to help comparing the logs.
I propose to participate in the debugging if this can help you. Please let me know if you're interested and/or if new logs might be useful.

    Best regards.

    Dear Morgan

I'd be pleased to be reading from you. Unfortunately, 12 days have passed since I reported my dissatisfaction against JBW and I'm not alone ! You took time to investigate on the rush, I was very pleased and grateful to you, ready to regain confidence. Then, nothing for the past week. Today, we all are at the same point as before, weeks before, months before !

Shall we be keeping the faith, being quite sure that it is going to finally overcome most of the current eBay annoyances, i.e.: yellow button, time difference, failed snipes, logging issues, auction moving to the wrong flap, ... or shall we consider that JBW fell into abandonware ?

If you need help to test a patch, let us know. At least, please read my previous messages, I'm willing to provide help to you if it's pushing a more stable version faster and easier for you.

I'm still considering to donate, it's up to you to press on the right button !

Again, thank you for all the good job you made. I checked the other program you mentioned and, No, I won't stick to it. Yours is far better!

    Kind regards

Greetings,If you want to keep up on what's being done, you can keep an eye on this page:

    https://github.com/cyberfox/jbidwatcher/commits/master

That first weekend I had a fix for the Time Left problem, and I've fixed the uncertain login result in most cases that I know of.  The last few days I've been trying to solve some problems around how I release the application, so it's easier to ship changes.

Responding to email and bug reports is not as high a priority for me as working on the application itself.

I don't feel that every message requires a response; if I tried I wouldn't have time to do anything else, and it would frustrate everyone.

Best of luck with your auctions,
