clone custom column config to other tabs
Reported by Tom Metro | May 7th, 2008 @ 08:38 PM | in Features
I customized the layout of columns on a tab and didn't see a way to replicate this customization on other tabs. It is a fairly time consuming process and near impossible to replicate identically by hand. If this can't be done, it would be a useful enhancement. I'm not sure how the UI would implement this.

Greetings,
In general, the settings for the 'current' tab are copied to any newly created tabs. (Or at least they're supposed to be.) I can certainly see the idea of 'clone column layout from tab', probably in the Properties sheet for the tab.
I'll keep it in the back of my mind, though. Right now, I'm trying to get the basic code stable. Patches are especially welcome for features like this, that I just can't get to right now because I'm working on stability.

You're right, that seems to work. Either I didn't have the correct tab
selected when I created a new tab, or I used a different procedure to
create a new tab.
Actually, I think my use case was creating a new tab via the search
dialog. Perhaps when you use that method you get a generic column
layout, rather than a clone of some existing layout. If you were to
clone, the question is which tab to clone? The first? Whatever one
happens to be selected?
In other matters I've seen some inconsistent behavior in having column
layouts preserved across a program restart. For example, I just noticed
the thumbnail column disappeared, though as mentioned in another ticket,
between sessions I accidentally ran the 1.x version, so that might
explain the previously unsupported column disappearing. (This discussion
really belong in a separate ticket. If you're aware of one tracking
column layout issues, please refer me to it.)

Yup, that would do it, or from the tab context menu, which is what I
normally interact with when customizing a layout.
I'll keep it in the back of my mind, though.
Thanks.

Of course...most of these suggestions are just "nice to haves" that
appropriately should fall low on the priority list.
