JBidwatcher (2.0beta7) can't snipe
Reported by garryn | August 18th, 2008 @ 05:33 AM | in 2.0 Full Release
JBidwatcher (2.0beta7) can't snipe, although existing snipes appear the snipe option is greyed out on auctions. There is the option to cancel existing snipes AAhhhhh! I don't know if existing snipes will work but rather than find out too late I'll download v 6 again.
First time I've ever had a problem (time I paid something to you ;) ).
Mac OS 10.4.11 G5
One day could we please have the update option decreased from one hour minimum, perhaps additional option of 5 minutes. That said as the action approaches updates seem to get more frequent, perhaps I'm missing something...

Greetings, For the items that aren't showing a snipe option, are they being shown as fixed-price (FP)? I've heard reports that sometimes auction listings are being recognized as fixed-price listings, which of course you can't snipe on.
As for the update frequency, it is every 40 minutes until the last half hour, during which it's every minute. If this changes, it will be to increase the time between updates, generally.
I can't really reduce it, as the multiple of {auctions watched}x{jbidwatcher users}x{updates/day} becomes a really big number, quickly.
For example, if the average user watches 50 auctions at once (I have no idea), there are 7000 users (roughly right), and the updates were every five minutes (288 a day), then collectively we'd be loading over 100 Million page-views to eBay a day, or 3 BILLION views a month. That's extremely abusive, and would get me in real trouble. (It would be about 30% of their entire estimated December 2007 traffic, for instance, which is a truly huge number, and would qualify as a Distributed Denial of Service attack, which would land me in jail.)
The other key thing to remember is that for most auctions, nothing happens for more than 99% of those updates. 7 day average auction, 36 updates a day under the current code, minus one for the last half hour, plus 30 for the last half hour, roughly 281 updates over the lifetime of an item. Being generous, and saying the average item gets 1.4 bids, that means that for 99.5% of the updates, nothing happens. If it were every 5 minutes, it would mean that 99.93% of the updates, nothing happens.
This is all stuff that I have to think about and balance, that the end users of JBidwatcher don't. It's also why the update frequency is going to do nothing but become longer, in the future.

I now have a better understanding on update, which is fine.
I left the v7 version running on the desktop and now I can snipe but many current auctions are listed 7 times instead of once but if there was a snipe it is only listed once. However it is now possible to add a DIFFERENT snipe value to the same auction.
Some items listed once are (FP), others are listed 7 times. There seems to be no consistence. What is the keyboard command to print a winow to a file? I can then send you an image.

This only appears in the 'current' tab. ended is fine. With v7 open and bidding in v1 bidding is working fine.

Log is empty. Activity (if it would be helpful) I would prefer to send, rather than publish publicly if possible.

We have the problem in beta 8, the items are initially marked as (FP) then after a few reloads the (FP) goes away but we still do not see the snipe. I believe the snipe is recorded but not showing since the option to cancel a snipe is enabled. In addition upon closing the program we are prompted regarding existing snipes. In addition shipping charges are not being displayed for certain auctions. eg. 250290072096 and 300256538749. In other words calculated shipping is not being reported.
Thanks

Greetings,
Marking this as a duplicate of #327, the fixed price problem. There are multiple issues described in here, but the initial report was specifically about the snipe option being grayed out sometimes.
I believe I know why that's happening, and I'm working on a fix. Follow ticket #327 for information as I update.
