Login error at last minute

I lost an auction this afternoon when it came time to prepare for snipe. I got the following error:
- Preparing snipe.
Mon Jul 14 14:35:29 EDT 2008: Getting the sign in cookie.
Mon Jul 14 14:36:04 EDT 2008: Couldn't sign in!
Read timed out.
It kept trying but was unable to connect before the auction ended. Why is this happening? I've lost 2 auctions recently because of this.
