eBay UID/time-date tag overlaid on toolbar

Reported by Doug Jones | April 28th, 2008 @ 08:52 AM | in 2.0 Full Release

Not a functional problem, just a visual one. The text displaying eBay user ID and date/time moves as the window is resized, causing it to be overlaid on the other toolbar objects.

    Greetings,

Yeah, it's partially because I have a few too many toolbar icons, and partially because I resist forcing a minimum window width which would make it happen less.

It's really just a cosmetic thing. I'd rather deal with sizing my screen manually than not be able to size it myself.

And I like the icons being right there... some may not be absolutely necessary but they are handy.

    Greetings,

The idea would be that the window couldn't be shrunk past a certain size, but you could expand it more. Still, I know the feeling. It's actually why I wrote JBidwatcher in the first place; the best app at the time (2000) couldn't resize, so descriptions were mostly unreadable.

For the icons, it is useful to have them there, but it really should be for the things that get used often. I'm considering moving 'View Log' and 'Report Bug' to a menu item in the release, since they're more important for the beta than the full release. The other ones I'm unsure about are the 'pause updating & searches' and 'update all' icons.

Anyhow, that's far afield of the core issue. :)

    Greetings,

I have implemented a change like I described. You generally can't resize the next beta below 1000 pixels wide. We'll see how that fleshes out.

Notably this is only true for Java 1.6, because Java 1.5 didn't allow limiting the size that the window could shrink to. :(

1000 pixels? Crazy idea imho, what about people that dont even have 1000 pixels wide of screen resolution?

My laptop has 1024*768 fixed resolution. I would need smaller icons. Actually the machine i have jbidwatcher running on is a headless unix box (pIII-450 with 256MB RAM) with no xserver. just xrealvnc running in 800*600 or even VGA, which is fine with version 1.0.2.

Besides, 1.0.2 seems to perform much better on that box, at least on massive multisnipes (100+ auctions) the beta is totally unusable (often its not updating ended auctions so it doesnt snipe or snipes fire much too late)

On this one, how hard would it be to move the search box up a little, and put the login name/time/date info directly below it? (Sorry for my ignorance: I don't do Java.) I can see where you might need to make the whole row of icons and so forth a bit taller, but by the same token, folks with lower screen resolutions wouldn't have the scrolling or overlap problem. On my screen (1600x1200), it looks like that would look okay.

Just a thought. Awesome program in general, though. Very happy with it. :-)
