Paths not set

Reported by mad_cyclist | July 22nd, 2008 @ 05:51 AM | in Support

I am running 2.0 beta 3 as the windows exe from a usb stick. Even though I have set all the paths in the config file to point to the usb stick, it still creates files on the c drive. Also as the usb stick gets a different drive letter assigned on different machines, all paths need to be able to be relative as well as fully detailed. (So for instance \temp should work as well as F:\temp) This seems to be ok for auctions.savepath but not for search.savefile which reverts back to the c drive.

    Hi,

as default JBW 2.0x stores/creates needed files on Win XP systems in

    c:\Documents and Settings\(Current User)\.jbidwatcher

(resp. in the approriate path within c:\Users on VISTA).

You can change the path for your XML backups and the auctionsave directory to reside in (or in sub dirs of) the program folder within the options or by editing the config file directly.

However I havn't found any way to move the actual workhorse database

    c:\Documents and Settings\(Current User)\.jbidwatcher\jdbd\*.*

to another directory. JBW can rebuild this database from the stored XML files, so you should be able to preserve your auctions for another computer by storing them on the USB stick. However you very likely will have to edit your config on the new system again before you get your acutions as it defaults to the .jbidwatcher dir again. And also very probably a bunch of your other settings will get lost, too, as the standard config files also reside in that folder and don't think of getting moved.

Akind of workaround would be writing two little batches -- the first one copies everything from the .jbidwatcher dir to the USB stick, the second one brings it back to C:

To do it correct for every Win OS and language you will have to extract the JBW folder from the registry; a place to start from would be:

    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders\

    Sincerely,

    Therese

    Greetings,

Pass the '--usb' parameter to JBidwatcher on launch. It'll run everything out of the current directory at the time JBidwatcher was launched. On Windows, you can create a shortcut to set this value.
